In
the unspoiled hills of Plainfield,
up a straight dirt lane lined with stone walls and maples, an
artist works in his hand built studio/barn. Whether he is working
in stone, steel, cement or sticks and hay, the figures he produces
have a great vitality. In the scarecrows this life energy is
due to the lightness and strong flexibility of the skeleton
assembled in the proper proportions.
Maple and ash saplings, gathered from the artists woods are
trimmed into leg bones and are attached to pine block hips.
A backbone appears with pine shoulders and stick thin arm
bones. The skeleton is fleshed out using muscles of hay or
cloth or paper. Used clothing brings it all to life or the
naked energy of the hay surface is left to stand on its own.
